The Yorkshire Timber Decking Co Ltd undertook a sizeable re-landscaping project across our rear garden, an area of about 300m², comprising stone patio areas, feature walls containing planting zones, the creation of a feature pond with natural cascade, wilded planting areas, rockery and lawn. Electrical lighting and some plumbing were also included.

The work was undertaken over approximately 8 weeks during October/November 2020, including periods of poor weather, and was led personally by Richard Charles who attended site every day, assisted by Ebb, his son, and other labourers in support as required. The personal hands-on approach by Richard and his son meant that not only was all due skill, care and experience brought to bear, but also enabled prompt attention to matters of detail and effective management of changes as and when matters arose. 

We were always made to feel fully involved in the project and the contractor readily took on board any comments, proposed amendments or extra items we proposed. Richard was always ready and happy to advise as required and to explain his detailed proposals going forward. We were never left in any doubt as to what the proposals would entail, the detailed day to day programme of work and how we would be affected.

The job was quoted on a fixed price basis which meant that we had cost certainty for the schedule of works agreed at the outset. Payments were made in stages during the project to a timetable agreed with us and in line with progress on site.

All workmen on the site were friendly, polite and courteous.

The appearance and quality of the job are superb and exceed our expectations.

Good things come to those who wait!

We had seen some of Richard’s expertise at a friend’s house as well as looking at his website prior to calling him in late April 18.  Our project was to revive a circular crazy-paved patio.  Richard re-assured us that the existing stones could be re-used, which was a bonus. We additionally required some screening to provide more privacy. Richard provided some options and we agreed on 6 decorative posts, with a linking rope swag. He also mentioned that he had a 6 month lead time! We had a quote within 24 hrs – fixed for the duration, which we accepted. Richard called us again in November to advise us of an estimated start date. We had already decided now that additionally he could grind out and point a natural stone wall, re-lay a path and level up and point our back courtyard which had subsided badly. The end result is great. Price wise, bearing in mind nobody knows what lies underground, the quote was fair and the knowledge of the quality of his work was persuasive.

The garden was so overgrown with nettles and weeds that just to go down the steps in the rockery required the agility of a mountain goat. The lawn if you could call it that was covered in Dandelions and moss, having just retired from work the last thing I wanted to do was to set about transforming the garden so I asked Richard and his team to do it. Over two weeks my back garden became a beautiful place. I had a small pond and waterfall built with the old stones from the rockery a circular indian stone patio and new turf the surrounding area was then covered with a membrane and pebbles. When my neighbour came round for coffee she was amazed and asked if Groundforce had been. We first commissioned Richard's services three years ago and have used the company twice since then. We have been consistently delighted with the quality of their work. From design to build, Richard and his colleagues have produced work of an exceptionally high standard. We've had three phases:

Phase 1 was raised decking with a balcony and steps - it looks fantastic and we absolutely love it - it has provided us with an outdoor room for entertaining - perfect for barbecues in summer and decked with Christmas lights for mulled wine in winter . The balcony overlooks our garden andmakes the most of views over the city that we've never been able to enjoy before. Ideal for breakfasting in the sun at the weekend or relaxing with a glass of wine after work!

Phase 2 involved the construction of a semi circle patio made of Indian stone and the erection of trellis to screen the bottom of the garden - we were really pleased with the way it enabled us to enhance the planting scheme and it's added a new perspective to the garden.

Phase 3 has involved the creation of a U shaped bed - constructed with sleepers - for growing our own veg plus some hard standing for a greenhouse, cold frame and shed, it looks really good and it's also practical and functional.

Phase 4 - a water feature and lghts for the decking - to be completed shortly. Richard took a photo of a water feature design I'd had my eye on for ages and used one of his contacts to create the copper chutes which will be attached to a sleeper and form a fountain.

Each time Richard's team has cleared and tidied the site and left it in an immaculate condition and they've always been pleasant and polite, arriving when they say they will and completing the work exactly as requested.

Richard and his team have just completed the third project they have undertaken at my house. The first, about 9 years ago, involved the laying of 2 stone flag patios on different levels, with random stone retaining walls and a sloping rockery incorporating a cascade and pond, plus a pergola in one corner. The standard of workmanship was very high, especially the random stone walling, which was a major reason for asking him to do the second project, about a year later, which was to lay a block paving driveway with a surrounding stone retaining wall. As this is at the front of the house the wall needed to be of high quality, and it is.

When the third project arose I had no hesitation in asking Richard. This was to construct timber decking around a newly built log cabin, with stone access steps. It was quite a complicated job because of the corner design of the cabin and the slope of the land, but it is now finished and I am extremely pleased.

I would have no hesitation in recommending Richard for any of the tasks he has undertaken at my house - patio laying, stone walling, cascade and pond construction, pergola building, block paving and timber decking. We hired Richard and his team to rip our old front and back gardens out, and lay new paving, turf and gravel. Right from the start Richard was professional and helpful. He offered ideas and solutions, and was agreeable when we changed our minds a lot! When doing the work, Richard and his team were tidy, hard working, punctual and respectful of our home. Since moving into my house at Alexandra Gardens I have wanted to have the garden professionally landscaped, it is quite a difficult space and as with many 'new builds' quite a limited one.

I had been particularly impressed with my next door neighbour's garden which was originally designed and laid by Yorkshire Timber Decking Company over five years ago. One of the most impressive attributes of this garden is that years on it still looks excellent, which I believe is testament to the quality of materials and build originally carried out.

My neighbours supplied me with the companies' details and I met soon after with the owner Richard Charles. During our initial meeting we discussed various options for the design of the garden. It became very apparent that Richard had a breadth of knowledge and experience which helped me formulate my own ideas along with his.

Several informal meetings followed to discuss the various options, materials, costs etc. (Richard always made time to discuss things through and was willing to adapt original ideas in light of new ones). We eventually agreed on a design, budget and a time slot to begin work. I was also given an estimated time to the completion of the work.

The job began on time; two of Richards's staff joined him (Damien and Ollie) both were as professional as Richard in their approach and it quickly became apparent that they really took pride in what they did. As the project progressed and the original plan become reality I was able to further discuss ideas and make appropriate changes. Nothing ever appearing to be a problem, the comment usually 'This is your garden and you need to be happy with it'

Friends who visited the house could not believe the speed the transformation took place. The project was completed on time and to budget. Some of my friends have already asked the Yorkshire Timber Decking Company to come up with ideas and costs to carry out their own garden transformations. I am more than happy to recommend Richard and his team to them.

Richard visited the site to provide us with an initial quotation for the work, he was friendly and made useful suggestions as well as listening to our ideas. A quotation was provided within a short time and he was willing to discuss alterations and means of keeping the costs within our budget. The quote was very competitive!

We were very satisfied with the standard of work. There were plenty of opportunities to discuss the work in progress and Richard was always willing to make changes when requested. Thank you very much for the tremendous job yourself, Ollie and Dean did at our property last month. You have managed to transform our uneven, overgrown and unsightly garden into a fantastic space that we are really proud of and cannot stop looking at. It is amazing to think that we now have a patio with great timber features, a lovely lawn, impressive decked area and vegetable garden to make use of throughout the year. The driveway and re-construction you did to the front of the house has also made a big difference and we have received many compliments from our neighbors and passersby!

Both Gareth and I found you very helpful and approachable. You came up with some great ideas from the start and continued to make some good suggestions e.g. what type of plants to put in, which have enhanced the overall look of the garden. It was a big help that you were flexible with the initial plans and enabled us to change our minds a few times as the job progressed.

Whist the work was carried out we were impressed with your reliability and tidiness at the end of each day. It was a bonus that everything was power hosed down at the end. Your team was very friendly and good to have around, in particular Ollie and Dean were great with our puppy who constantly wanted to run around in the mud or escape onto the road!

Thank you very much for all the work you, Ollie and Dean did in my garden. I highly recommend Yorkshire Timber Decking for a first class service, starting from the visit to discuss what was needed, through the actual work and for speedy response to the one small snag that arose after the work had finished.

The pricing was excellent and the work was done efficiently even taking into account a few design changes that were needed as the week progressed. All staff were polite, capable, prompt and cheerful. The garden went from being a rubbish tip with poor access and no security at the bottom to 2 large useable areas of decking, a large lawn and some tall fencing at the bottom.

The back yard being cleared down to a single level and then gravelled is working out beautifully and the dogs are real fans of the water feature, particularly on hot days! I really like my new gate to the yard, having it split like a stable door is coming in handy in lots of ways.

Me and the dogs very much appreciate being able to easily get into the lower garden via the new decking which is a major improvement on the dodgy metal steps! The different levels of deck are working out really well and the storage space underneath is coming in very useful for storage of plant pots and such.

Altogether I am delighted with the change to my garden, the work done by your company and the additional work done by Jon Wood, the electrician, to improve the lighting and fit an external socket. It's great, thank you so much.

Dear Richard,

Now that I have finally emerged from the winter and ventured into the garden, I have remembered I should have written you a letter thanking you for the work you did.

We were delighted with everything. The pond area is transformed and the trellis structure looks great - it really frames the garden. There are quite a lot of things planted beneath it which I hope will grow up and over. The patch of the grass at the front looks lovely and the rose bushes I bought look very healthy. All in all, you and the boys, Gavin and Olly, did a great job at a good price and we have been recommending you to other people.

On that note I wonder if you would be interested in looking at my daughter, Jessica's, garden? It is a small back terrace garden and needs some work in terms of a small patio area and maybe some grass and a raised bed. She has some ideas and would be happy for you to give her a quote.
